Hope for the Heartbroken

It was over. It should have been over a long time ago but only now, after months of disappointments and acquiescence, was I ready to admit it. As I folded myself into one corner of my oversized couch, a friend on the other end of the phone consoled me with words that she had no idea were a promise spoken by Jesus in the Gospels. Something greater, she said.

Not something better, not something different, something greater.

She reminded me that there was something and someone greater for me than this relationship would have me believe. That God’s plans for my life were greater. That I had greater worth. She spoke life and hope over me when I felt that my only shot at love and happiness had just slipped through my fingers.

Jesus told the Pharisees—not just once, but many times in Scripture—that something greater was in their midst. It’s easy to read about their spiritual blindness with a critical eye, but I’m as unseeing as they are at times. Their Savior was standing right in front of them and they didn’t recognize Him, just as my hope-filled future was still unfolding before me but I struggled to see it. At times, I still do.

But whether I perceive it or not, it’s there, like the steady reassuring words of Jesus. Something greater is in our midst—mine and yours—because Jesus is always in our midst. Always available, totally present to us, ever patient and full of understanding. He is the fulfillment of the promise we’ve been waiting for, the answer to all of our yet unmet longings. He is our something greater.
