The Path to Christ

The Path to Christ

Some days I struggle with humility, of allowing myself to be transparent so that those looking at me will see through to Christ. I shadow that clear layer with a dense facade of personal accolades and honor for the achievements I’ve made. I get so caught up in the grandeur of it all that my actions are often fueled by selfish desires.

I suppose this is a common struggle in the world we’re living in today. In this rat-race to gain the most followers or take the best selfie, it is easy to get lost in narcissism, to allow the self-praise to cloud the path to Christ.

This is why I am constantly inspired by the humility of Saint John the Baptist. Because when given the opportunity to claim personal fame, he deflects by pointing the attention to Christ.

I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, 'Make straight the way of the Lord.' (John 1:23).

I see so much of how we’re called to live in this simple statement. I see the humility required for such a task.

And I wonder how much of what we do proclaims to the world, “make straight the way of the Lord.” In the midst of racking up those likes or crafting the best hashtags, are our efforts leading others to Christ, or are they fattening up the number of followers in this popularity score we’re keeping for ourselves?

Let us look to Saint John the Baptist as an example of humility. And when the world seeks to capture our attention with promises of glory, may we point to the One who deserves our praise.
