Letting the Spirit In

Letting the Spirit In

When I became a part of the Blessed is She writers' community, I was struck by the way in which our leaders would begin our prayer time.

"Come, Holy Spirit," they would pray. A bit of silence would follow and then again another invitation:

"Come, Holy Spirit."

In the silence of those quiet invitations, I would take a deep breath and invite the Holy Spirit into my own life and heart as well. As a child it hadn't quite sunk in that I could have a relationship with this third Person of the Trinity. It was a gift to be reminded that He was there for me too, in a communion of love with the Father and the Son.

It's easy to think on this Feast of Pentecost that the Holy Spirit can't be present to us in the same way that He was for the Apostles (see John 20:19-23). Yet He is! Today's Gospel Sequence professes that He is our refreshment, our coolness, our dew, our renewal. He gives life to our work and light to our times of darkness.

If you were to write your own Sequence today, what would your heart like to say to the Holy Spirit? What would be your words of praise, your heart's deepest request?

Come Holy Spirit Who frees me from worry.
Who loves me as I am and gives me hope for the future.

Come Holy Spirit Who knows my story through and through,
and gives me a new vision.

Come Holy Spirit, giver of all good things
and filler of the cup of my heart.

Come Holy Spirit, make my heart big, for Your sake. Amen.

He is our refreshment, our coolness, our dew, our renewal. // Karen SchultzClick to tweet Twitter
