To the Brim

To the Brim

Today’s reading about the marriage at Cana is so well known, I usually gloss over it. But something struck me this time. Saint John wrote that Jesus told the servers to fill the jars with water and they did.

"They filled them to the brim" (John 2:7).

To the brim. Not half way, not most of the way, but to the brim. Imagine the abundance of wine on the edge of spilling from the twenty-gallon sized jars.

Jesus works miracles, and when I bring water He draws out wine. But that’s just it, isn’t it? I have to bring something for Him to transform. He won’t force it upon me; instead, He waits to be invited in, even though He knows my needs. My prayer, my work, and my relationships can be transformed by Jesus if I give Him the opportunity to do so. Our God is a God of abundance.

So often I hold on to parts of my life, trying to keep them within my grasp, thinking that if I can just tighten my grip a little more I can figure it out myself. But Jesus wants to reveal His glory to me in my letting go, offering all of myself, to the brim.

Jesus wants to reveal His glory to me in my letting go, offering all of myself, to the brim.Click to tweet Twitter
