Castles and Kingdoms

Castles and Kingdoms

I live in California. Land of the sea, sun, and mansions. And sometimes when driving past the enormous castles that hug the edge of the shoreline, I get to thinking. Because what would it be like to live in such a palace anyway? I’d imagine that it would be quite grand, that the sun would shine into the extravagant windows extra brightly and that the Earth would concede to its opulence with gentle drifts of the most fragrant air.

I can only assume that the Pharisees in today’s Gospel conjured up similar ideas in their minds when thinking of the kingdom of God. And who could blame them? Because if a human person can attain such lavish possessions, how much more could the King of Kings have?

“For Behold, the Kingdom of God is among you,” Jesus tells them. (Luke 17:21).

And isn’t that so much more magnificent? Because His kingdom beats tirelessly through us. It nourishes hunger through weathered hands and uplifts souls through faulty tongues. His perfection is at work in our imperfection.

And I think we so often forget that. Because it’s so easy to see the flaws. It’s easy to find the wrinkles on your helping hands or hear the quiver in your chants of worship. But His kingdom is alive in you! It is working through your weakness. It is filling your soul with grace.

Let it nourish you, and then let it nourish others. Because in this grand kingdom, there is room enough for everyone.

Take some time today to pray quietly with Our Lord. Let Him nourish you.
