If there's one thing I'm pretty passionate about, it's the importance of filling my home with books. When I was growing up, there wasn't a lot of extra money at hand. But my parents would always do their best to make financial exceptions for books. That mentality has rolled over into my own motherhood. Stories can be a great way to expose our children to our Faith in a way that is approachable and subtle. Books on the Saints for kids offer stories full of adventure, mysteries, and morals. But one good problem is that there are so many of them, and it can be hard to find a place to start.
Wonderful Catholic Books on the Saints for Kids
The following is my beginners' guide to filling your bookshelves with the Faith.
Tomie De Paola Books
One of my favorite authors is Tomie DePaola. Ever since I was a child I've loved his simple but beautiful artwork and stories. He's written many books about his Catholic Faith and many books on the Saints for kids. If I had to pick my favorites, they would be Mary, the Mother of Jesus and Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland. His books on Bible stories and parables are also worth a spot on any bookshelf.
Saint George and the Dragon by Margaret Hodges
This book is a beautiful telling of the legend of St. George. Trina Schart Hyman's illustrations are sure to captivate any small child. It's a bit long in the text, but remains a favorite of ours.
The Story of Saint John Paul II: A Boy Who Became Pope by Fabiola Garza
Anyone familiar with the current Disney movies will notice a similarity in Fabiola Garza's book about the life of Pope St. John Paul II. And for good reason: she's a Disney character illustrator. Her book on JPII is touching and beautiful. I truly hope we can add more books from her to our library in the future.
Our Lady of Guadalupe by Carmen Bernier-Grand
This is another beautifully-illustrated book that tells the story of St. Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe. The language in this book is lovely and poetic.
Martin De Porres: Rose of the Desert by Gary D. Schmidt
This is a wonderful book about the life of St. Martin De Porres. While the book does not shy away from the adversity St. Martin faced, even within the Church, it is a story to inspire every little child.
Roses in the Snow by Dessi Jackson
Encounter the lovely story of a little girl learning the story of her namesake, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, from her grandmother. This book is a great option for any family with Princess-obsessed children and a wonderful example of how a real Princess followed God.
Brigid's Cloak by Bryce Milligan
St. Patrick isn't the only Irish Saint whose bio is worth stocking on your shelves. This is a wonderful tale about St. Brigid and her famous cloak.
Saint Felix and the Spider by Dessi Jackson
This is a fun tale inspired by the life of St. Felix. It looks at how a person's life can be "changed by one of God's tiniest wonders."
Compilation Books on the Saints for Kids
If you'd like a little more bang for your buck, or if you have children who are older, there are also many compilation books available. My favorites are the Once Upon a Time Saints series and Loyola Kids Book of Heroes and Loyola Kids Book of Saints.
These are shorter studies on the lives of the Saints. They are great additions to your home library to help give older kids more stories from which to learn and draw inspiration.
You can find a list of these books and more over on Goodreads.
