I didn’t grow up with an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in my house, and there wasn’t one in my parish. As a young girl, I didn’t even hear the words “Sacred Heart.” The one exception: my grandmother belonged to the “Sacred Heart Auto League,” and had an emblem on her car.
Sadly, I grew up in a generation that set aside (sometimes purposely and sometimes unknowingly) some of the most beautiful Catholic devotions, including devotion to the Sacred Heart. It wasn’t until young adulthood when I slowly began to discover Catholic devotions. And I was instantly captivated by the simple but deep way they invite us to grow in love for the Lord. Devotions and the prayers and acts of love that accompany them connect us to the entire Catholic Church—past, present and future—and their richness and depth elevate our prayer and draw us closer to God.
Enthronement to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is one such devotion. And it could be a beautiful next step to take after spending the month of January praying with and reflecting on the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
What is Enthronement to the Sacred Heart?
The act of enthronement invites Jesus into your home in a special way and gives Him authority over your family and household.
- If you do not have an image or statue of the Sacred Heart, yet, find one that you are drawn to and place it in a central location in your home.
- Set a date with your pastor for the enthronement ceremony.
- Most likely, your priest will have the ceremony prayers, but they are also available here.
To continue devotion to the Sacred Heart within an enthroned home, consider the following:
- observe First Fridays
- recite the family Rosary before your Sacred Heart image
- celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart on June 28
- renew your consecration regularly
