I watched my little boy run through the tall grass in our backyard. He laughed as he scooped up a fistful of dirt in his tiny hand, full of wonder, captivated and curious about everything around him, joyful and free … and blissfully unaware of the fear that crept into my heart. A fear that wrapped itself around my mind like tangled thorns, threatening to stifle the beauty of this moment.
We were awaiting medical results for a lump we found on his leg. His doctor assured us that it was probably nothing, but anxiety is a cruel and demanding adversary. I was consumed with worry and ashamed at what I perceived as a lack of faith. My heart longed for peace, but I felt like I was drowning in my distress, sputtering and struggling for breath.
I went to the adoration chapel and knelt quietly as tears ran down my cheeks. In this place, where God gazes at me with infinite love, I prayed the only prayer that came to mind: “Jesus, I trust You.” A deep cry from the depths of my heart.
As I prayed, a woman walked in carrying a large image of Divine Mercy. At that moment, I knew the Lord was with me. His wounded hands revealed His heart, a heart that was poured out and emptied for me. I was being held within the rays of His Divine Mercy. Jesus knew my every worry. Jesus knew me entirely. He saw my pain and revealed to me His constant Presence. I am never without His tender embrace. I am never without His love. He is faithful.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you” (Jeremiah 31:3). This is a promise from our Savior. He is the lover of our souls. Every burden, every weary sigh, every tear, every cry from the depths of our hearts is seen and heard. We are fully known by Him. Love abounds.
