The Saints on the Sacred Heart of Jesus
In the Sacred Heart, every treasure of wisdom and knowledge is hidden. In that divine heart beats God’s infinite love for everyone and for each of us as individuals. -Pope St. John Paul II
Reflect
One year on my birthday, my husband had to work. He works the night shift, so there was not going to be any birthday dinner or fancy dessert. I was on the hook for the kids’ dinner, bath, and bedtime, like usual.
I tried to keep my chin up, but I was pretty disappointed. I know it’s just a day, but I love my birthday.
My husband got dressed in his uniform, tactical vest, and duty belt, kissed us all goodbye, and walked out the door. About 20 minutes later, my mother-in-law stopped by to drop something off to me. The moment I opened the front door, my husband snuck in the back door. I chatted with her for a minute until I had that distinct someone-is-behind-me feeling. I turned around to my husband standing in his full duty uniform, flowers and chocolate in hand. He had taken the night off work after all, but put on the whole charade to fool me. He then whisked me off to a whole fun evening.
It was the best birthday I’ve ever had.
I remember being so surprised that he put so much effort into surprising and delighting me. His uniform is not fun to wear; the fact that he’d willingly put all the uncomfortable pieces on just to trick me was such a testament to his love.
Here’s the thing that really floors me, though. As much as my husband loves me, as big of a gesture as that birthday was, there is Someone who loves me infinitely more.
Who loves you, sister.
The God who made the universe, who holds it all in the palm of His Hand, loves you. He loves every hair on your head. He loves every quirk that makes you who you are. He pulled off the greatest gesture of love of all time: death on a cross. He would have done so even if you were the only person to save.
He can never be outdone in mercy. He can never be one-upped in love. His Sacred Heart beats for you—exactly you. Believe it. It’s the Heart of the Good News.
