Entrustment. To entrust to someone is to give in trust. In Polish, our beloved Pope Saint John Paul II describes this as “zawierzenie” a term used to describe entrustment and gift, especially in the filial context as in when Cain murdered Abel, and Cain asked God, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (source)
As we read today in the First Reading from Genesis, we find that his brothers envied and hated Joseph. So much so that they sold him to the Ishmaelites.
Can you imagine Our Lord’s heart as He saw this happen when Joseph had been entrusted to his brothers?
“And to entrust means that God believes in you, trusts that you are capable of receiving the gift, that you are capable of embracing it with your heart, that you have the capacity to respond to it with gift of yourself” (source).
Yet God still believed in Joseph’s brothers to repent, receive the gift, embrace it with their hearts, and respond to it! Receive. Embrace. Respond.
We can see that Reuben, the brother who had swayed the others to not shed Joseph’s blood, but instead throw him into the cistern in an attempt to save him, did his best in the midst of evil to acknowledge this responsibility.
Our lives are filled with so many moments such as these, sister, in which we are called to constantly fight for each other and be guardians of that entrustment and giftedness. May you be filled with hope, because I am here to remind you that the Father of All believes that you are capable!
