“What do you want me to do for you?” He replied, “Lord, please let me see.” // Luke 18:41
In this Gospel passage, we learn about the blind beggar. As soon as he heard that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by, he did not waste a moment—he seized the opportunity to encounter the Lord.
What struck me about this verse was the blind beggar’s persistence in hope. He called out multiple times, even when Jesus did not hear him. When the people around rebuked him and told him to be silent, he persisted.
Jesus finally stopped and asked him, yet again, to repeat his request: “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man never stopped asking. Then, he was healed.
There may be that one prayer in your life that seems to go unanswered. Perhaps it’s a part of your life that needs healing—a recurring wound that keeps opening. Maybe it’s a sin you keep committing. Or maybe you are struggling with infertility. I can imagine the frustration and hopelessness you may feel in those moments. You may feel like you’ve prayed enough prayers and cried enough tears and you may even begin to wonder if God is even listening. I know it is hard to wait. It’s hard to keep asking when it would be so much easier to just give up. But the good Lord looks on you with love and kindness and is gently nudging you to persevere in hope.
The blind beggar was determined to meet Jesus and unabashedly made his request despite the admonishments of the people. He did not doubt Jesus and he did not grow tired of asking. Let us remember to have the same spirit of anticipation and confidence in the Lord as we make our pledge of prayer this month. Let us remember to persist in hope.
Let Us Pray
Jesus, we reach out to You in great hope. We ask You for healing, for restoration, for renewal... Lord, we want to see. Amen!
