Liturgical Living During the Easter Season

Liturgical Living During the Easter Season

After praying, fasting, and almsgiving in the desert of Lent, we enter the Easter season with joyful praise. We walked with Jesus through His Passion and Death, and now we enter the glory of His Resurrection.

“We are an Easter People and Alleluia is our song!” (source) And because of this, Jesus gave us fifty days to meditate on and celebrate the joy of His Resurrection before He ascended into Heaven and sent the Holy Spirit.

In some ways, it is hard to fathom how to live out these fifty days. After feasting and celebrating on Easter Sunday and throughout the Easter Octave, what else is there to do? We certainly cannot keep eating jelly beans and chocolate eggs, can we?

How do we live liturgically during the entire Easter season?

Below are eight ideas for celebrating the Easter season—from Easter Sunday until Pentecost. By maintaining an Easter spirit for all fifty days, our faith will continue to grow and bloom—well into Ordinary Time and beyond.

Eight Ideas for Living Liturgically Throughout the Fifty Days of Easter

1) Foster Holy Habits

Did you focus on cultivating your personal prayer routine during Lent? If so, keep it going this Easter.

  • Maintain your daily prayer practice, whatever that entails.
  • Keep a weekly Holy Hour.
  • Go to Confession once a month.
  • Make a desert day.
2) Take an Emmaus Walk

One of the Resurrection accounts takes place while walking. Found in the Gospel of Luke 24:13-35, the story tells of two disciples who encounter Jesus while traveling from Jerusalem to Emmaus. At first, the disciples do not recognize Jesus, but He walks with them and explains the Scriptures to them. Finally, they recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread.

On a nice spring day, take a walk on a favorite path or find a new hiking trail to explore. At some point, take a break, read the Emmaus passage, and journal your responses to these questions:

  • When in your life did you not recognize Jesus’ presence?
  • What happened that made Him more recognizable to you?
  • What would you talk to Jesus about if He joined you on your walk?
3) Refresh Your Home

Perhaps you spent some time this Lent decluttering and detaching from unnecessary material goods. Now is a great time to refresh your home, bringing new life into your living spaces.

  • It's not too late to make a paschal candle to light during prayer time throughout the Easter season.
  • Add pops of spring color to your rooms with throw pillows.
  • Replace heavy blankets with light throws.
  • Purchase a couple of plants to bring bright green hues indoors.
  • Diffuse citrus essential oils.
4) Listen to Uplifting Music

There is plenty of bad news and negative media flooding the airwaves. So, instead of filling your mind and heart with things that will surely get you down, listen to uplifting music instead. One beautiful collection of traditional Easter hymns is Easter at Ephesus by the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles. Here is an Easter playlist curated just for the Blessed Is She community.

5) Create Something New

Jesus’ Resurrection redeems and restores all of creation. At the dawn of that first Easter morning, a new light shone throughout the world—the light of the Resurrection. Yes, indeed, He makes all things new (see Revelation 21:5). That is why Easter is the perfect season to bring out your yarn, watercolor paints, scrapbooking supplies, colored pencils, or any other hobby materials you may have. Perhaps it has been a while, but this season of new life and restored hope is the perfect time for you to create something new too.

6) Honor One (or Two) of God’s Saints

There are some incredible Saints who are honored in the spring. Get to know one or two of them, such as Saint George (April 23), Saint Catherine of Siena (April 29), Saint Joseph the Worker (May 1), and Saint Isidore the Farmer and Saint Dymphna (May 15).

  • Add a Saint’s holy card to your prayer space.
  • Read a short account of the Saint’s life.
  • Ask the Saint for his or her intercession for a particular prayer request—just like you would ask a friend to pray for you.
7) Set Up a Mary Altar

Often, the Easter season extends into May, the month dedicated to the Blessed Mother. Make plans to honor our Lady in an extra-special way this spring.

  • Incorporate the Rosary into your daily prayer routine.
  • Listen to Marian hymns.
  • Set up a Mary altar in a prominent place in your home, and include a statue or image of Mary, candles, and flowers.
  • Plant a Mary garden.
8) Celebrate a Birthday

Pentecost, the last day of Easter, is the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Blessed Mother and the Apostles as tongues of fire. It is traditionally known as the birthday of the Church, so why not have a birthday party?

On this special day, wear red or orange to Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit. After lunch or dinner, serve birthday cake. Conclude with a prayer to the Holy Spirit, asking Him to govern your thoughts, words, and actions giving you courage to share the Gospel as you enter Ordinary Time.

There are so many ways to celebrate the Easter season. How will you carry out the festive nature of Easter for the next fifty days?
