Reflect
When I was pregnant with my first child, I listened to a podcast by a woman who was recalling a very painful time in her life. Her firstborn child was dying and her marriage was on the rocks as a result of that tragic circumstance. She reflected on that season, saying something along the lines of, “I had to ask myself, is Jesus enough? If at the end of this road I’m not a mom because my baby dies, and I’m not a wife because my marriage ends, is Jesus enough? I had to decide the answer was yes.”
I was floored by her faith in that difficult season. She wasn’t saying she was giving up hope or not willing to work. But at the end of the day, regardless of what came her way, Jesus was enough for her. Her witness resonated so deeply with me.
The reality is, I often say that Jesus is enough for me, or that He is who I turn to, but my actions tell a different story.
When I reach for caffeine or a cookie, desperate for some mid-afternoon energy, instead of turning to deep breaths and whispered prayers.
When I impulse shop out of envy or sadness or discontent, spending money we didn’t budget and shouldn’t use, instead of taking those feelings and the disquiet in my heart to the Lord.
When I catch myself longing for more, more, more, when the life I find myself in, in all it’s ordinary magic, is exactly the life I prayed for for years.
What does it take to truly allow Jesus to be the King of our hearts? To be the One in our life? To be the end-all-be-all? I certainly don’t have all the answers, as I’m stumbling my way towards deeper trust, greater surrender, and more reliance on Him. Aren’t we all?
What I do know is that for Jesus to bless our efforts, He must have efforts to bless. Every tiny sacrifice is multiplied through His mercy and grace. I know that He gives more energy than a double shot latte ever could, more contentment than a new pair of shoes can ever offer, deeper rest than even the best afternoon nap.
Each and every moment, we’re offered the chance to begin again as He asks us this question:
Will we let Him be the King of our heart?
Let Us Pray
Heavenly Father, show us the things that rule our lives and hearts, that we may detach from them and be devoted only to You. Open our eyes to the areas where we need to surrender to You, our Life and our Hope.
