Entrusted to Mary: How Emilia Wojtyła’s Faith Formed Her Son’s Heart

Entrusted to Mary: How Emilia Wojtyła’s Faith Formed Her Son’s Heart

Before he was Pope John Paul II, whose coat of arms bore the Marian “M” and whose papal motto was Totus Tuus (Totally Yours), he was Karol, a little boy growing up in Wadowice, Poland. Long before the world knew him as one of the greatest popes to ever live, his heart was being formed at home through the faith of his mother.

Emilia Wojtyła was known as a gentle and deeply prayerful woman. Her life included illness and sacrifice, yet those who knew the Wojtyła family spoke often of a house filled with devotion and love. Emilia did not just teach her children about God and take them to Mass, she demonstrated how to love God through the rhythm of prayer, trust, and devotion to our Mother Mary. Through her example, young Karol encountered Mary as a real Mother who cared for him and guided him toward her Son. Though Emilia Wojtyła could not have known, that simple yet profound lesson would shape the entire course of Karol’s life.

A Home Shaped by Marian Devotion

Prayer was woven into the daily life of the Wojtyła household. Emilia encouraged a love for the Rosary and for Mary’s maternal presence in the life of the Church. In doing so, she introduced her children to a deeply personal relationship with Mary. For young Karol, Mary became someone to whom he could turn with trust, learning, as a child, that we are never alone in bringing our hearts to God.

This foundation and connection to Mary became even more important when Emilia died in 1929, when Karol was only eight years old. Losing his mother at such a young age could have left Karol feeling a deep sense of loneliness, but the faith Emilia passed on and nurtured in Karol helped guide his heart during that painful loss, directing him toward Mary’s maternal care.

Years later, as Pope John Paul II, he reflected on the importance of the Rosary throughout his life. In his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, he wrote, “The Rosary has accompanied me in moments of joy and in moments of difficulty. To it I have entrusted any number of concerns.” Those words reveal something beautiful about the faith he received as a child. The prayer that began in the quiet of his family home became a lifelong refuge where he could bring every joy, sorrow, and responsibility before God through Mary.

A Pilgrim’s Path to Mary

After Emilia’s death, Karol’s father continued guiding his son’s prayer life, often bringing  him to Marian shrines. Among these sacred places was Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, which invites pilgrims to walk prayer paths while meditating on the Passion of Christ and honoring the maternal presence of Mary. For young Karol grieving his mother, these pilgrimages deepened his love of God and trust in Mary’s care. While walking the prayer paths at Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, a truth took root in young Karol’s heart: although his earthly mother had passed away, he was not without a mother; Mary was still caring for him.

Years later, Pope John Paul II spoke of this shrine with much affection, recalling how often he prayed there as a boy. While he always felt a special closeness to our Lady in that place, he recognized that the faith of his mother Emilia first taught him how to turn his heart to Mary.

The Influence of Emilia’s Faith

Emilia Wojtyła did not live to witness the extraordinary mission her son would one day receive. She did not see Karol’s ordination to the priesthood or his election to the papacy. She never saw him travel the world preaching about Christ and inspiring millions of believers. Nonetheless, her influence remained present in his life. The Marian devotion she instilled in Karol as a child became a defining characteristic of his spirituality.

His papal motto, Totus Tuus, was inspired by the teaching of Saint Louis de Montfort and expresses a complete entrustment to Jesus through Mary. In several ways, the foundation for that entrustment started in the faith of a mother who loved Mary and taught her son to do the same. Emilia’s story reminds all of us that the work of motherhood, including spiritual motherhood, often bears fruit beyond what we can see, and sometimes, what we may never see in our lifetime. That can be both humbling and consoling—to know that God is at work even when we cannot measure the impact. The Rosaries prayed at home and the example of faith lived day after day shape hearts in ways only God fully understands.

Entrusting Those We Love to Mary

Emilia’s witness offers a beautiful invitation to entrust those we love to Mary’s maternal intercession. Whether through praying the Rosary, visiting a Marian shrine, or keeping an image of Mary in the home, these acts allow Mary to care for the intentions we hold in the silence of our hearts.

On the Cross, Christ entrusted His beloved disciple to His mother, saying, “Behold, your mother” (John 19:27). During this moment, Mary’s motherhood was extended to the whole Church. She continues to care for us and brings our wants and needs before her Son, Jesus. By entrusting our loved ones to Christ’s Mother, we do not step away from our responsibility to love and care for them. Instead, we invite a heavenly Mother to accompany us in that love.

A Simple Yes That Changed the World

Emilia Wojtyła likely never imagined how far the seeds of her faith would reach. But her trust in God and devotion to Mary helped form the heart of a Saint who inspired the rest of the world for generations to come. Emilia’s life reminds us that faith lived fully within the home can have a profound and lasting impact. The prayers we offer up, the devotion we form, and the people we entrust to Mary are never small acts of faith in the eyes of God. We may not always see the fruit of those prayers, but we can trust that Mary receives every intention placed in her care and brings it to her Son, Jesus.
