Reflect on the Word // 

I was in deep spiritual conversation with a close friend when someone came up behind me with a piercing tone. No sooner had the interruption begun than my friend, with a profound maturity, self-possession, and freedom, moved us and our conversation aside out of this person’s way. His charity toward the other person and to me was clear and unencumbered by the thought of offending them.

This visceral vignette came to my heart’s memory as I felt the security of the Lord’s words, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent” (Luke 4:43). The Lord gives me strength as He shows me that I have also been called and sent. I have sympathy for our Lord as I consider how He could have rested in the seeming approval of these people who pursued Him to discover the deserted place to which He had gone early in the morning to pray. But instead, He rested in the Father. His rest was to go apart from the crowds, approving or vindictive, to pray to His Father and to be rooted in their communion of love. It was from His place of profound union that He could easily discern that He needed to move on to minister to new towns and places “because for this purpose [he had] been sent” (Luke 4:43).

Sister, we too have been given a purpose that is woven into our daily yeses which can seem so ordinary. May we perceive the wondrous glory of God in our daily, moment-by-moment responses to our purpose. May we also be rooted and grounded in His love so that we can answer His call.
