His Song, a New Song

"Sing to the LORD a new song" (Responsorial Psalm).

I look back on Advent past and think, I have wasted another liturgical season. Yes, we had the wreath out, and yes, I did the Blessed is She book with a few small groups, and yes, I got most of the shopping done before it even began, but was it what it could have been?

Not really. My habits didn't profoundly change. My prayer didn't radically shift to a deeper level. My song stayed just about the same with a small glimmer of peace. My family celebrations did look different this wild year of global pandemic, distance learning, and Lord help me, distance-home-instructor-mom-job, with family undergoing grueling financial burdens. But did my song change?

Sister, if your song hasn't changed, and you're rolling into Christmas like, Yeah, ok, next year might be profound but this one is a wash, I urge you to think again. Pray again. Sing again.

You aren't too far gone for Christ's warmth, His redeeming sweet little babe chub arms, His heart beating for yours. He wants to pour a new song into your heart.

Christmas is a season all unto itself. We celebrate His coming as only Catholics can: for a super long time through Candlemas in February!

Cast aside (preaching to myself here) the ennui and malaise and despondency of 2020. Not because you're so strong and confident, but because the Lord of the Universe is here anew, afresh, awake. His song is the sweetest, brightest hymn of invitation to worship before the manger.

I'll see you there, on my knees, crying and stretching out my heart to His as He awakens my soul and gives me a new song to sing.
