L'Arche is an international movement made up of communities around the world where adults with and without disabilities live together in a spirit of mutual respect, love, and celebration.
Their founder Jean Vanier describes the community like this: “The secret of L’Arche is relationship: meeting people, not through the filters of certitudes, ideologies, idealism or judgments, but heart to heart; listening to people with their pain, their joy, their hope, their history, listening to their heart beats.”
He founded the first community in 1964 in France, and it soon spread to Canada and around the world. Rooted in Roman Catholic spirituality, the communities are open to all believers, and have been home to spiritual thinkers like Henri Nouwen, whose work influences and informs our Beloved retreats.
