Who’s Your True Rock?
Who’s Your True Rock?

September 25, 2026 // Friday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time

Read the Word // Open your Bible to today’s Psalm: Psalm 144:1b and 2abc, 3-4

Reflect on the Word //

My husband has always been the capable sort, projecting confidence from the moment we met. It’s no surprise that his name is Peter, which means “rock.” For years I looked to him as my problem-solver, advisor, and provider, affectionately calling him “my rock.” Yet he was still human—not super-human. Life threw us some curveballs that slowly revealed our faulty foundation: I was making Peter a sort of idol, putting unrealistic expectations on him and looking to him before God as my security. Peter, meanwhile, was trying to prove that he was sufficient and strong enough to not need anyone’s help, including God’s. This kept us from living our authentic identity as children of God who relied not on finite human abilities but on God’s limitless love and provision as Heavenly Father, the True Rock (see Psalm 144:1b).

Gradually, I started taking my problems to God first. In prayer He would prompt me to ask, What or whom am I turning to before You? or Where does my security lie and why? The why behind these questions was consistent: fear. Peter also started surrendering his self-sufficiency and abandoning himself to God’s will and help. We even began calling God the “Big Rock” and Peter the “Little Rock.”

Still, I feared the Lord couldn’t—or wouldn’t—always come through. I believed He provided for others in amazing ways but doubted this truth for us. An especially unwieldy curveball many years into marriage brought the greatest healing and freedom in this area; we had little choice but to live in total childlike dependence, shamelessly begging the Father to provide and humbly counting on His help. Provide, He did—and we marvel, still.

Secure children aren’t afraid to be needy and admit limitations. They run to their Father for every need, expect Him to respond, and trust that He’ll provide.

You, too, are a child of God, called to this disposition. Don’t settle for a tottering, limited stone as your security—be it yourself or someone else. Lean fully on the One True Rock: running first to your divine Father, wise problem-solver, patient advisor, and faithful provider.

Relate to the Lord // What do you need from the Father? Run to Him, expect Him to respond, and trust that He’ll provide.
