Do you know what you want? Do you know what you really want for yourself, your loved ones, and for your life? And are you asking God for that?
Recently I've noticed that there is a part of me that sometimes denies or minimizes what I truly want for myself. As a life coach who helps women identify and achieve what they truly want for their lives, and as one who has received a lot of coaching myself, I know that sometimes it can be difficult to answer this question with honesty and with the courageous faith that what I want can be possible.
The mother in today's Gospel knows what she wants, and she asks Jesus for it. She wants her two sons to go to Heaven and to sit on the right and left of Jesus in His Kingdom. I love her boldness. She tells Jesus her prayer without fear of disapproval and without concern of what others might think. Her sons have a similar boldness too. Jesus challenges them by responding, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?" They respond with confidence, "We can" (Matthew 20:22).
I think that Jesus appreciates boldness, courage, and confidence from us in our prayer. Perhaps it can even be a form of trust in Him and a way to surrender to His power that He really can do all things and can do anything for us. God does not always answer our prayers as we expect. Perhaps sometimes we truly do not know what we are asking. At other times, perhaps God wants some deeper sacrifice or service or greater love from us in order for our prayer to be answered.
I hope that you can take courage and confidence from the sons of Zebedee and their mother today to boldly ask God for what it is you truly want and to be willing to do what is necessary—in service and in giving your life—for God to bring about that goodness in your life!
