Growing up, my Easter basket was filled solely with candy. I loved it! After fasting from candy and sweets for almost six weeks, a basket of candy was a welcomed treat Easter Sunday morning.
It wasn’t until I started dating my husband, Mike, that I realized that some families put gifts other than candy in their Easter baskets.
The first Easter I celebrated with Mike’s family—after a long night shift working as a nurse—is so memorable. I was given an Easter basket from his family with different gifts, each incredibly meaningful and beautiful. It was the beginning of a new tradition for me, one Mike and I would implement in our own family. Now, one of my favorite things to do is to pick out one or two gifts for the Easter baskets I prepare.
Children Love Simplicity
The more I learn and grow as a mother, the more I realize how children love simplicity. They find joy in the smallest gifts and treasure our presence more than anything else. The greatest gift we can give our children—whether it is our spiritual children, children we teach, godchildren, adopted, or biological—is our love and presence. If you decide to gift your child with an Easter basket this year, keep it simple.
Like Christ teaches us on the Cross and within the tomb, the greatest gift we can give our families is ourselves, who we are, our presence, our joy, and our love.
